Moving Checklist – Vancouver, BC

They say that moving is one of the main stresses in life, but if you are well prepared it could be an exciting journey towards a new start. To help you make the best out of your move and get you prepared, here are some useful tips that will make your move efficient and hopefully stress-free.

4 to 6 Weeks before moving

  1. Book your move by calling 604-800-2736 or by visiting http://54.218.65.105
  2. Schedule your mail to be forwarded to your new address with Canada Post

3 Weeks before  moving

  1. Get boxes and moving supplies, or rent reusable boxes
  2. Take unwanted items to charity ( Salvation Army ) and/or dump or even list them on CraigsList (You could make a few dollars or you would be surprised what people will pick up for free). We can help if you need items to be transported 604-800-2736
  3. Change of addressDrivers’ license, Medical Plan Coverage, Service Canada, Canada Revenue Agency, Canada Pension Plan ‘If applicable’, Canadian Firearms, Banks, etc…)
  4. Other ( Make travel arrangements and reservations, Notify kids’ schools, transfer records, Register at new school…)

2 Weeks before  moving

  1. Arrange disconnection of utilities at old place + connection at new place ( BC Hydro )
  2. Return of any cable TV equipment and arrange for new service ( Telus – Shaw – Novus )
  3. Arrange phone service at your new home and schedule disconnection at the old home ( Telus –  Shaw – Rogers )

1 Week before moving

  1. Pack a suitcase with the clothes and toiletries that you’ll need the first day in your new home
  2. Pack a special box with other essentials you’ll need for the first few days and marks this box “Do Not Move”
  3. If you are doing your own packing, this is the time when you need to start

The day before moving

  1. Take down curtains and curtain rods
  2. Empty, defrost and clean refrigerator; clean the stove

Moving day!

  1. Keep paperwork accessible
  2. Strip and dismantle beds
  3. Clean premises that you are leaving, inspect with the landlord
  4. Final walk-through: check all closets and cabinets

After moving

  1. Contact city/municipal offices to find out about garbage pick up, recycling facilities and local regulations and information ( City of Vancouver )
